Keyhole Surgery
|
Some operations are performed with the use of miniature cameras or fibre optics. It is a particularly low-impact form of surgery, through 2 small incisions in the knee, for example. A small camera is inserted through one incision and the surgeon can insert the necessary surgical instruments through the other. Operations are performed with a combination of local anaesthetic and a mild epidural, and you have the option (if desired) to follow the operation on a screen. The surgeon will explain the operation as it takes place for the interested patient. Not all patients wish to see their own operation, so they can instead have a doze during surgery. This type of surgery is often called the sport surgery, because it very often sport injuries that are operated on using fibre optic cameras. Examples of keyhole operations: > Knee arthroscopy (e.g. meniscus) > Arthroscopic cartilage repair / replacement > Ankle arthroscopy > Cruciate ligament reconstruction > Unstable kneecap |
